Apple releases new beta updates for iOS 18 and iPadOS 18 ahead of upcoming public launch, discover the latest features
Apple has released new beta versions of iOS 18 and iPadOS 18, which are now accessible to registered developers. These updates bring a variety of new features and improvements designed to enhance user experience and device performance. Developers who wish to test the beta can do so by opting in through the Settings app, as long as they have an Apple ID associated with a developer account.
New features in iOS 18
iOS 18 introduces Apple Intelligence, a collection of AI-powered features integrated deep into the operating system. Although these features will be rolled out later in beta, they promise significant improvements in various areas. Notable features include advanced writing and editing tools, image and emoji creation, and significant improvements to Siri and search functions. Updates to Siri focus on better natural language understanding and contextual awareness by integrating with ChatGPT to handle more complex queries.
These Apple Intelligence features are only available on iPhone 15 Pro models and iPads with M-series chips. In addition to AI improvements, iOS 18 offers new customization options that allow users to rearrange Home screen apps to create open spaces, use dark space for app icons, and use tinting options.
Additional improvements
Control Center sees even more customization in iOS 18, and third-party developers can now add controls to their apps. Users can also change or remove the flashlight and camera icons on the Lock screen. The Messages app gets support for Rich Communication Services (RCS), which improves interaction with Android users. Other communication improvements include the ability to schedule texts, use new text effects, send messages via satellite when cellular service is unavailable, and use any emoji for Tapback replies.
Security and convenience are also addressed by introducing a special Password application for managing logins, passwords, Wi-Fi passwords and verification codes. Additionally, users can now lock and hide apps that require secondary Face ID or Touch ID authentication, even when the phone is unlocked.
Safari introduces a Highlights feature that summarizes articles and highlights important information on websites. The Photos app gets a user interface overhaul, and the new Tap to Cash feature enables private and secure money transfers with Apple Cash. Other notable features include solving equations and transcribing voice memos in Notes, game mode for improved performance, and the ability to respond to Siri on AirPods using head gestures.
Currently, iOS 18 is only available to registered developers, but Apple plans to release a public beta version later this month. The official public release of iOS 18 and iPadOS 18 is scheduled for this fall, bringing a wide range of new features and improvements to enhance the user experience across all Apple devices.
